The point of homework:
- Finish off work that was not completed in class
- Practice work that needs to be remembered
Homework should be work you can complete, without the help of an adult. It should not be ‘busy work’ which includes pointless worksheets that do not even relate to what you are currently learning at school.
Homework also reinforces lifelong skills that you will need as an adult. These include working to a deadline, and completing work on your own.
Homework will be part of your life for a very long time, not just when you are at school. So take notice of my advice and find some study strategies that will work for you. Today!

Your brain has these things called dendrites which connect information with other information (they look a bit like microscopic broccoli). When you reinforce information (by revising it) these connections are strengthened. They get coated in this stuff called myelen (I think that’s how you spell it…didn’t myelenate that particular dendrite). This is how short term memory becomes long term memory. When I tell my students about this process they often voice concerns that they don’t want to fill their mind with useless stuff. Remember that no knowledge is useless, except that which you don’t possess. Your brain never fills up; in fact the more you learn the more open your mind becomes. But remember also not to practise mistakes, there are some things that are best not to reinforce.
