in Revision / Studying

This is such a simple study strategy.  Only study what you understand.  Why?  Because you will only remember what you understand.

Try this Simple Study Strategy now.

Think about something you learnt in class today.  Find something that you understood.  It might not be easy, but you understood it.  Now have a go at taking notes and remembering that information.

Now find something that you just don’t undertstand.  Try and remember that for me.  See.  It’s alot harder to remember because your brain is confused.

Your brain needs to understand the information.  Your brain needs to process that knowledge, link it to something else in the brain before it can remember it.

 But I don’t understand anything!

I am sure you do understand something.  But follow the strategy below to make sure you understand your work before you commit to revising the information.

Study Skill Strategy

Let us assume you have a list of notes together of a new topic.  Grab a colored pen and a highlighter.

  1. Go through notes and highlight information you understand
  2. Make a note in the margin of the points you don’t understand
  3. Take notes to school and ask a teacher or friend to explain
  4. Repeat process
  5. Start studying the highlighted information

This strategy will make sure you only study what you understand.
