Read Exam Instructions

in Test-taking / Exams

It is a busy time of year for students in Austalia.  Most high school students are preparing for end of year tests and exams.  So I thought I would highlight some study skills strategies to help you do better in those exams.

Read Exam Instructions

When you first sit down to a test the teacher probably tells you to write your name on the front cover and then read the instructions.  What do you do during that time?  You probably tap your feet nervously and look around the room to see where your friends are sitting.

Bad idea.

You need to read the exam instructions and take note of the following:

  • time limit
  • materials aloud
  • type of questions
  • rules for asking questions

 Exam Perusal

Most tests now invole 5 to 10 minutes of perusal.  This is where you are allowed to read through all the questions and instructions.  Exam perusal is a great opportunity to be strategic, to make a decision of where to start.  That’s right, you don’t have to start at the beginning of the test.

Here are my top tips for Exam Perusal

  1. Read each question
  2. If you are allowed to make notes, underline key words, note difficult questions
  3. Decide which question to start with.  If you think the multiple choice are easy then start there.  If you come across an essay question worth a lot of marks then you might start there.

Good luck with your studying and I hope you get the best grade possible.
