What’s the point of assignments?

With the question, most teenagers will tell me two things.  One is that “we do 7 hours of school work at school, so we shouldn’t do anymore work at home” and the other is that adults don’t do assignments.

You should do more school work at home.

It is a good idea to complete some work at home because it shows you, your teachers and parents that you can work independently, organize your time, research and complete a task with minimal direction.  These are all important skills.

Adults do assignments.  It just has a new name.

WORK!

An assignment is a task that is to be completed independently or in small groups.  And when you end up in the workforce you will do lots of these tasks.

Take this blog for example.  I have to research the topic, plan my time, write and edit continuously.  I need to budget my time and do a bit of it every night so as not to let it interfere with my family, job and social life.

So stop worrying about whether you should have to do assignments.  Just go do it!
