In a previous post “Is it ok to listen to music when studying?” I gave my personal opinion on the subject. However, I have been spending some time researching this topic and now have some information for you.
Studies into the effect music has on learning
Firstly, there have been many studies on whether music, specifically classical or baroque, has positive effects on people’s memory, intelligence and development. Common findings are:
- Can aid memory (specifically if you use the same music when studying the same topic)
- Creates an emotional response (e.g. happy, sad, angry). You can remember more information if it is connected to an emotion.
- Reduces stress (always a good thing)
- Uses both sides of the brain (double the power)
What music should I listen to when studying?
Here is a list of composers of classical music:
- Vivaldi
- Telemann
- Bach, J.S.
- Corellie
- Albinoni
- Brahms
- Pachelbel
- Beethoven
- Chopin
- Grieg
- Handel
- Mozart
Memory Mixed Tape
I have a new link on the top of the page called Mixed Tape. It contains a collection of wordless songs that you might find useful to use when studying. They are embeded into the page, so just press play. There is no need to download them and save them onto your computer.
Let me know which ones you like, and check the page regularlyfor new additions.
