Yes, I CAN! Helping Yourself Succeed in School and Life

Do you ever think about things you’d like to try out or learn about, and then say to yourself, “Oh… I could never do that…”

Maybe there is a little voice in your head telling you what you can and can’t do. Maybe the voice says things like…

“The ‘cool people’ don’t (do, say) things like that!”

“But I don’t know how to (fill in the blank).”

“I’m not smart enough to get a job doing (fill in the blank).”

“If I try, I might fail! So why bother?”

Remember that there are all kinds of people out there, into all kinds of exciting things. You could be one of them! For inspiration, do a quick YouTube search on any topic that interests you… whether it’s politics or publishing, bug collecting or baseball, music or math.

Chances are, you’ll bump into someone who is serious about that pursuit and maybe even making some money being an expert at it. What a wonderful thing… to be good at something you love, and able to turn that talent into a livelihood for yourself!

Knowing this is possible means knowing you can do anything you set your mind to!

Are you attending school at the present time? Then guess what… you’re being given a wonderful opportunity to explore what kind of person you are as well as who you’d like to become. This is a chance to try different things, find out what really lights you up, and maybe think about pursuing that as a hobby or even a career.

But before you can do this, you’ve really got to believe in yourself and what you’re capable of. So the next time that little naysaying voice inside tells you, “No you can’t…” — you come back with, “YES, I CAN!” And maybe you can even find some good responses to…

“The ‘cool people’ don’t (do, say) things like that!” (Maybe “cool” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Maybe what’s “cool” today won’t be quite so cool in ten years. Maybe “cool” is whatever is important to YOU!)

“But I don’t know how to (fill in the blank).” (Of course you don’t, because you’ve never tried it before. Beethoven didn’t wake up playing symphonies, did he? Once you try it, you’ll learn… and then you’ll know how! But first, you’ve got to TRY.)

“I’m not smart enough to get a job doing (blank).” (Did you know that humans only use about 6% of their brains? That’s a lot of grey matter inside that wonderful noggin of yours, just waiting for you to burn some new information on there. The more we try, and the more we use our minds, the smarter and better we get. So take that fearless first step. Learn something new, let go of your doubts… have fun, and look to become the “expert” in whatever your heart desires!)

“If I try, I might fail! So why bother?” Lots of people “fail” the first time! When you were just a little baby, you tried to sit up but what happened? You “failed”… so you tried again, and again… and one day, you sat up, and your mom or dad looked at you in amazement – and they snapped your picture! Remember… if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. One day you’ll really do it… and someone will take your picture. :) )

What it all boils down to is this: you are young, bright, creative, and the world is filled with possibilities for your future! So get excited about that, and really put your heart into your studies and interests– “what you may want to be when you grow up.” And if someone says “No, you can’t…” you tell them, “YES… I CAN!”
