Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!

“Bueller!  Bueller!  Anyone!”  Best quote every and I often use it in my high school classes, especially if no one is listening.  My students don’t often get the joke!  But I have a chuckle.

Anyway, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a classic Teenage movie from the 80’s.  If you get the chance, see it.  But it came back on my radar a couple of weeks ago on twitter.  You see a group of people got together and played out all the major scences of the movie on Twitter and Facebook.  You can read more about it here

Fun way to Study using Social Media

Think about it!  You could use the same idea to study history, geography, a novel, book or play.  You just need to get a group of friends together and set up some twitter accounts.  And the perfect thing about twitter is then you will have a summary to study from.

Hey there! Just wanted to say, if I was in your high school class, I would completely get that reference!

As a pre-service teacher entering his Junior year at college, I’m still discovering what kind of teacher I want to be. And since I do this everyday with my friends and family, I’ll be using a lot of pop culture references to connect with the students and get them lightened up and in a good mood. The only problem is, I have to find a date beyond which they won’t understand the references, and not use those! I would use Ferris Bueller, but not some of the more obscure movies, like Office Space or something along those lines; and it makes me sad, cause these are classics!

Also, using social media is a great idea to reach students! Twitter is a good idea, but I think Facebook or myspace would be a little too far. YouTube is also a great way to both teach students and put them in a more relaxed state.

With today’s kids becoming more and more technologically inclined, its almost our duty as teachers to continue researching and keeping up with technology to reach students on their levels and in ways they understand; the Overhead is getting a little old, so current teachers have replaced them with projectors. We need to keep embodying this ideal, and it’s good to keep up with the fast pace of today’s kids!
